Construction of representations in news
Construction of Representations in News
US shootings:
In this news clip it shows how the BBC news constructed together a video of a shooting which was reported at a California bar in America.
The words 'breaking news' suggests it's the biggest story out of the millions of stories that could of been shown but also the way the words are portrayed shows its urgent and everyone needs to know about it. Also the news reporter says that 'the gun man is still on the scene' which makes the story seem more frightening and real but also he never clarified that he had been caught.
This clip is aimed at people who are against guns because it is showing Americans in a violent way and having easy access to guns and it is yet again another story involving guns. It also persuades people that guns in America make the crime rates rise because it is easier to have access to weapons and suggests to the British people that Americans are violent and America is not very safe.
Galtung and Ruge theory
The news editor use the Galtung and Ruge theory to construct and decide if this story was newsworthy enough to show. This particular story is about the proximity, negativity and rarity to why it was presented on British news, culturally America is close to our country and is why many news stories from America are showed over in the UK. Also bad news tends to have higher news value however the BBC represent America and there people in a bad way and therefore British people judge Americans based off what they hear in the news. The rarity of the story is why it is so newsworthy to the media and it shows how rare it is because there are millions of stories that could of been broadcasted and this one was the top and 'breaking news'.
Louise Clara theory
The news editor also would have used the Louise Clara theory to construct and decide the newsworthiness of this story. This clip shows immediacy because the news is new and fresh as the news reporter says that the gun man hasn't been caught and is still out there as well as him saying that currently there were six injuries and there still could be more. Also it shows immediacy because he is reading from the paper on the desk showing he has just got the information instead of reading from the screen, this suggests that the news is new and the BBC has just received the information and quickly made it into a story to be one of the first to show coverage of this particular story and shows how important a news item is to the media. Therefore there is also suspense as the shooting is still happening when the news reporter is reporting what is going on, as well as the 'multiple injuries' it all shows how frightening the story is. This also suggests human interest because many British people are interested about what goes on in America and also about gun violence in America.
