The genre is shown through the picture, colour scheme and tagline in this particular film because the dark tones create an atmosphere of death and mystery. The picture is of the main character holding a gun which has connotations of murder, death and violence. Also this action film uses a tagline to give the audience an insight to what the film is going to be about.

This film follows the codes and conventions because it uses a billing block, strap line, film title and a picture of the main focus of the film which makes it a film poster. The strap line and the black background have connotations of death and darkness, which implies that the film will be set at night or in the dark. Also the font and colour of the film title indicates death and blood which creates a scary and mysterious atmosphere, this makes the genre obvious to the audience. The film title 'Insomnia' means inability to sleep which suggests that this films main aim is to scare the audience that much they can't sleep or the main character makes its victims experience insomnia during the film.
